Asbestos Overview

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate mineral that has a variety of useful properties. It is made up of large quantities of tiny fibres which are invisible to the naked eye. Asbestos has been used throughout the construction industry for a variety of different purposes. Some examples include; guttering, cladding, insulation, tiles and textured coating. The use of asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, but it remains present in numerous buildings across the UK.

How can we help?

We can locate, identify and quantify any asbestos you may have in or around your property by conducting an asbestos survey. Once the asbestos has been identified we can help manage it, by removing or encapsulating it.

How to determine if a material contains asbestos

Asbestos cannot be identified through a visual inspection. The only way to know for certain if a material contains asbestos, is to have a specialist take a sample and test it in a lab. We offer an asbestos sampling service where we can come to your premises to take a sample and get it tested at a UKAS accredited lab.

Why is asbestos banned?

In 1985 Amosite and Crocidolite (brown and blue) asbestos was banned in the UK. Later in 1999, chrysotile (white) asbestos was also banned. This is due to the health issues caused by asbestos. When asbestos fibres are inhaled, they can cause illnesses such lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.

The fibres are only released into the air when the asbestos is disturbed, so if you come across asbestos, we strongly recommend not touching it, and leaving it alone. We advise you contact an asbestos specialist, like ourselves, to receive advice on how best to manage the asbestos.
